National Fire Prevention Week
The week of October 10-12, 2022 is National Fire Prevention Week. The Ilion Fire Department has activities slated for the entire week including school programs, building inspections, and various training exercises.
Just a few reminders to pass on:
- Smoke detectors should be on every floor of your home and one in each bedroom. It is a good practice to test your smoke detectors twice a year and change the batteries. A good reminder is to do this whenever you change the clocks due to Daylight Saving Time.
- The acronym EDITH stands for Exit Drills In The Home. Fire Prevention Week is a good time to practice an exit plan in the event of a fire. Key to the exit plan is having a meeting place outside that everyone is familiar with.
- This is also a time to inspect your home for items that can cause fires such as lighters and matches. These should be kept out of the reach of children.Candles and careless use of smoking materials result in numerous fires and these items should be used with caution.
- Fire Prevention Week is also a good time to review the operation of electrical equipment in the home. The use of extension cords and power strips is not recommended. Also, any blinking lights, loose electrical outlets, or electrical equipment that generates heat should be repaired or replaced.
- Every bedroom should have two means of egress, generally a door and a window in the event that a person becomes trapped. It is also recommended that you sleep with your bedroom door closed.
